I had a really cool day today ... well it started that way at least ... but more on that in a minute. I started my day by heading to Huntington to my new specialty running store called
Robert's Running & Walking Shop at 1440 4th Ave. near the Marshall U. campus in Huntington. I missed my specialty running shop in Hudson, OH (
The Vertical Runner) and so my new running friend did some checking on the internet and found this one where she picked up a nice pair of Brooks running shoes today and I bought her a fancy pair of running socks to go with them to get her started. The owner of the shop was a real cool guy! He said they may be opening another shop in Teays Valley. I wish the Charleston Distance Run hosted a vendor's expo but they don't.

I met my sister at the running shop today and it was the first time that she had ever stepped foot in such a place and it felt so odd to have her there with me ... but exciting too. She first took interest in my fitness activities when I did
my last triathlon and she went and helped me out by keeping me company before the race and hanging around to take pictures. Today was the first time that she had a chance to followup with me about her pledge to want me to teach her how to run and I was eager to seize the moment. She was looking for a pedometer so I bought her one to get her started on her walking and she also picked up a pair of fancy running socks in a nice pink color. Additionally, I gave her a
shoe ID in case she gets hit by a bus or something. She seemed incredulous till I said I was serious (I'll blog about that some other time). This shop was pretty cool with all of its special gear. It didn't have as much stuff as my old running shop but I did enjoy looking at some of the nick knacks that were scattered around the shop
including some posters of
Steve Prefontaine (who helped popularize distance running) and a rock with the date of Pre's death (which I presume to be from the crash site). It was a great day and a fun time!

On the way back to Charleston I was chatting with my friend about the Huntington Marathon. My sister had asked me if she could walk in the 5k event this weekend while I run the 15 mile race. I told her that she was free to do that but that she may want to work on walking shorter distances first ... then I told her that it started at 7:40am and she was no longer such a fan. :-) I explained that those of us who will be running for 3+ hours will want the earlier start time for cooler temperatures. However, she did mention that she had picked up a brochure for the
Marshall University Marathon which will be held in Huntington on Sunday, Nov. 2. It has a 5 mile walk, a half marathon, and a full marathon in addition to a half marathon team relay broken into 3 segments of 3.3 miles, 5.7 miles and 4.1 miles. This is what my sister was asking if she could do with me and I said that perhaps we could if we could find a 3rd person ... then my friend also volunteered so I may have to make good on my promise to guru their running and miss my upcoming Scrabble tournament in Lexington, KY (ironically called the
Ironman Tournament). We'll have to see about that. I would be a bad coach if I said no. Then again, I may actually be able to make it since it looks like there is a gap in the "main event" on Sunday morning. How funny would that be if I left Saturday night, ran a race Sunday morning, and drove back to finish the tourney Sunday afternoon!
