DARK SIDE something something COMPLETE

Well, I went ahead and joined up with the NSA. No, not the National Security Agency ... rather I joined the National Scrabble Association. It was only a matter of time. I had to join up before playing in the upcoming tournament that my local Scrabble Club is hosting in April. My membership gets me a few interesting things ... in addition to extra geek points on my character sheet (sorry ... role playing reference ... more geek points). I now have access to some interesting word lists to help me learn the 778 or so approved 3-letter words that build off of the 101 acceptable 2-letter words that I've just about gotten down (yeah, I'll never learn all of that or the sum total of the 112,812 word currently approved for play in Scrabble tournaments). I'm also going to be receiving a newsletter every couple of months and I get to buy the OWL2 (Official Word List, 2nd edition) which is only available to members and includes all of the acceptable tournament words (including the bad and nasty ones). How many geek points do I get if I order that?

You already have, like a jillion, geek points . . .

How many geek points do I get for knowing that there are too many tiles shown in the tray in the comic strip?

I would say you get at least 50 points. Don't forget ... Satchel isn't too smart which would explain his extra letter (good eyes though).

I think that I have you beat. Tonight I was out with some friends and was trying to sell WVPR's Anna Sale on joining our Scrabble club and she asked if I actually had an NSA card and if I had it with me. I had to hang my head and say yes and that I had even had it laminated. She was quite excited when I produced it revealing myself as the Ubber Geek! It was like she had just won a scavenger hunt or something. :-)

A laminated NSA card. Wow. That's pretty "verde' "

Told ya dude! :-)

BTW, thanks for reading and commenting.

Don't hang your head, son - carry that card with pride!

Back when the membership cards were actually mailed, they were printed on card stock. Since the cards are now electronic, they are printed on whatever you happen to have in your printer.

Lamination is definitely the way to go in both those cases.

I've pondered making mine into a PDF and taking the resultant file somewhere to get it engraved or embossed on metal, though I suspect the cost to do so would exceed the annual membership cost.

Not sure where that rates on the "verde" scale, but since I've not actually done it yet, it probably doesn't count.
