we're number 2 baby!
WVU managed to rank #2 in the BCS standings this weekend after their win on Saturday. This is by way of being ranked number #2 in the AP Poll (sportswriters never cut us any breaks) and #1 in the Coaches Poll.
Mike, over at the blog Open Mike, lays out a compelling argument for why he thinks that WVU will play for the National Championship so long as they don't get themselves spanked by Pittsburgh (our true rivals) next week in the Backyard Brawl. We shall see!

I should be all "yay! number 2!" but I was so sure that we would be number 1. It sucks to have a great thing feel like sucking, kwim?
y'know... I've been thinking about this, and I'm beginning to wonder if the "backyard brawl" is even a big rivalry anymore, or just the remains of an earlier rivalry that everyone keeps up for show.
I mean, I hardly ever hear or see students hating on Pitt the way they did in the 70s and 80s, or even the 90s when I was attending.
It seems like there's far more animosity towards Va Tech than Pitt. I think all those years of having the Pitt game during Thanksgiving break allowed the flames of rivalry to cool to mere embers.
But I'll listen this week to see if the change in schedule has lead to a change in feeling.

That's a good point Michelle. When I was at WVU, in the mid 90's, I was there for the last game we played against Penn State. The Virginia Tech thing started toward the end of my being there IIRC after we got over the whole Syracuse bench-clearing brawl. Too bad VT had to have that shooting making it harder to hate on them without drawing ire. Grumble.
Really hadn't thought about the demise in importance of the Backyard Brawl, but you're right.
Back in the old days, Pitt always had such a good team. Now, they have Pornstache for a coach and they're not even ranked. Kinda hard to work up any worries about them that way. Then again, if those bastards pulled it together to beat us this year, we would be hating them anew for years to come. I really pray that doesn't happen.

Rivalries wax and wane depending on how good the two teams are. Any time one team can dominate, it tends to cool off. VT is a case in point - before Beamer made them a top 15 program, I don't remember any great rivalry with VT.
Having said that, Pitt will seriously want to mess us up this Saturday to keep us from going to New Orleans. It'll be plenty nasty.

It appears that the two rival programs might be going in different directions, at least for now. Hopefully, that's the reason for the lack of interest in that rivalry.
Personally, I still feel a lot of satisfaction after a good old fashioned whuppin' of Pitt.
My son started at Carnegie Mellon, just down Forbes Avenue from Pitt. My first trip to visit was the weekend of Pitt homecoming and there were a lot of Pitt fans on the street. I was so tempted to roll down my window and yell "Pitt ain't shit" while flashing my WVU shirt. But I restrained myself.
