pre - wv day ...

Tomorrow is West Virginia Day and since I will probably not get around to blogging about it on my day off I'll go ahead and do it now. This will be the first time in 9 years that I've been able to properly celebrate West Virginia's birthday (for some reason they don't celebrate that in Ohio). So the Mountain State turns 144 tomorrow and yet people still manage to mistake us for being part of Virginia. Sigh.

My day will likely start out early since my glass collectin' friend Hillary has been hounding me to go get the Blenko WV Birthday Piece that they make in commemoration of WV Day every year. As Hill describes it, this year 144 pieces will be offered on a first come basis starting at 8am at the Blenko glass factory in Milton, WV and if I'm going get one I need to be in line sometime between 8pm tonight and 6am tomorrow morning. I suppose that it's worth it as some of the past pieces have been beautiful and they always appreciate in value ... but that's an early morning! The idea is to get a piece for my mom's birthday present and it's a good one ... it makes me wish that I had liberated some of mom's collection from Ohio before vacating the jurisdiction.

At least I'll have the day off tomorrow. Actually, I'll have the rest of the week off after tonight as my office is closing shop Thursday and heading off to Snowshoe Resort near Elkins, WV (on Cheat Mountain - the second highest point in WV) for the annual West Virginia Public Defender Conference. As one of my work buddies in the Sheriff's Dept. reminded me ... I'll have to be careful to watch my speed as there may be a lot of cops keeping an eye out as all of the state's public defenders converge on the same remote spot.

Comments:
I'm guessing they don't celebrate a day like this in Ohio because they don't feel compelled to give state workers yet another day off.

Enjoy your day off! After all, I'm helping to pay for it. I'd like to get my money's worth.

By the way, my "Enjoy your day off" was directed at all state workers -- not you, Jedi. :)

My reference to Ohio not celebrating it was a joke about how I didn't understand why they wouldn't celebrate WV Day in Ohio. Come to think of it though, I was a state worker for 5 years there and they never let me stay home on the day that Ohio was founded. I guess I'm lucky to be back home!

Enjoy your day off!

Yeah - when I interviewed for my current job, reference was made to the fact that the Feds don't get those "weird" holidays the state folks do. :p
